Schluderns in Vinschgau Valley

The Churburg Castle towers on the entry of the Matsch Valley in Schluderns and it is one of the mightiest and best preserved castles of South Tyrol. The owner of the castle is the family Trapp for more than 500 years.

The Churburg Castle was built by the bishop of Chur, Heinrich IV. The castle has been devolved first to the reeves of Matsch and then, in the year 1504, to the family Trapp.

The Churburg Castle is a well fortified building with a Romanesque center in Vinschgau Valley. The castle changed handsseveral times and the new owners made various constructions in gothic stile and in the second half of the sixteenth century the ancient castle was transformed into a rich Renaissance residence.

You have a look at the biggest privet armory in the Churburg Castle. More than 50 sets of armor stand there, who all belongs to the Matsch and Trapp families. The center of the castle is the renaissance arcades, on the first floor. In the colonnades gallery you find a family tree of the owners of the castle.
